India’s abstention on UNSC vote

Date: 28 February 2022 Tags: India & World

Issue

India has abstained from voting on a US-sponsored UN Security Council resolution regarding the Ukraine war.

Background

India has been trying to maintain a balance between its relationship between the West and its strategic relations with Russia.

Details

The UNSC draft resolution was presented by the US and Albania, and co-sponsored by Australia, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Georgia, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Lithuania, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Romania and the United Kingdom.

About resolution

  • The UNSC committed its support to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognised borders.

  • It has asked Russia to refrain from any further unlawful threat or use of force against any UN member state. Russia has been asked to withdraw its forces unconditionally.

Reasons for India’s abstention

India has objected to the harsh statement made against Russia’s actions. It wants to maintain balance between both its strategic partners.

Fate of resolution

  • Russia chaired the meeting as the rotating chairperson. The resolution was vetoed by Russia by exercising its power.

  • Another permanent member, China also abstained from voting along with non-permanent members UAE and India.

  • China’s abstention was a surprise as it had previously opposed the vote on January 31, and was supporting Russia’s position.

India’s stated position

  • India has maintained its diplomatic position with regards to western bloc and Russia. While it has vouched for territorial integrity of countries, it has stopped short of outright condemnation of Russia’s actions.

  • This was done in order to bridge the differences and find a middle ground to foster dialogue and diplomacy between the parties.
