Ukraine before USSR
Majority of Ukrainians, Russians and Belarusians trace their cultural ancestry to the Kyivan Rus’. It was a federation of East Slavic, Baltic, and Finnic peoples.
The Tsarist Russia incorporated various regions of Ukraine into a single empire, which suppressed linguistic and ethnic identities.
Post Soviet collapse
Ukrainians were demanding for independence since 1990s. It escalated when over 300,000 Ukrainians created a human chain in support of freedom.
The granite revolution was against the signing of a new agreement with the USSR and was led by students.
The parliament of Ukraine adopted the country’s Act of Independence after a failure of a coup to restore communists at the helm of Russia.
Leonid Kravchuk was elected Ukraine’s first President. The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) was formed after dissolution of Soviet Union.
The CIS included Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine but the parliament of Ukraine never ratified the treaty to become part of CIS.
