Maharashtra was adjudged top state in water conservation category under National Water Awards 2018 followed by Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. Besides, Maharashtra Water Resources Regulatory Authority, Pune was awarded for the best water regulatory authority. Madurai district was awarded first nationally in Best District in Rejuvenation of Water Bodies category and third in the Best District in Groundwater Recharge category.
National Water Awards
- Instituted by Union Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation in 2018 to emphasise the importance of water resource management in India.
- It is given for 13 categories. Its prime objective is to bring best efforts in water conservation to national front and encourage all stakeholders to manage their water resources efficiently.
- It also seeks to encourage water use efficiency, recycling and reuse of water and creating awareness through people’s participation in targeted areas for ground water resources development, adequate capacity building etc.
