2nd Urban 20 Mayors Summit held in Tokyo

The second Urban 20 (U20) Mayors Summit was held in Tokyo, Japan ahead of G20 Osaka Summit.  It had seen participation of Mayors of 35 major cities from across the world. The themes of Mayoral Sessions were Climate Action, Circular Economy, Social Inclusion and Integration, Sustainable Economic Growth and Gender Equality. In this summit, mayors and city governors from 30 cities with  126 million people adopted 2019 Urban 20 Tokyo Mayors Summit Communique.

Highlights of Communique

  • It acknowledges that 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development provides universal and comprehensive framework for addressing many of the planet’s most urgent priorities.
  • It commits to identify links between local sustainable development strategies and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), particularly in three main areas: climate action; social inclusion and integration and sustainable economic growth.
  • It urges Global leaders to act fast on climate change, social inclusion and sustainable economic growth. It also urges G20 leaders to ensure greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions reduce substantially by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050, ensure access of adequate housing to all populations.

Urban 20 (U20)

  • It is initiative developed in 2017 under leadership of the Mayor of Buenos Aires and Mayor of Paris, and chair of Climate Leadership Group (C40) Cities in collaboration with United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG). It was launched in December 2017 at the One Planet Summit held in Paris.
  • It aims to tackle global challenges by leveraging the potential of cities as hubs of diversity and innovation. It seeks to develop a joint position and collective messages to inform and enrich the discussions of national leaders at the G20 Summit through unique urban perspectives.
  • It is composed of 25 major global cities viz. Beijing, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Hamburg, Chicago, Durban,  Jakarta, London, Los Angeles, Johannesburg,  Mexico City, Madrid, Melbourne, Milan, Montreal, Moscow, Rio de Janeiro, New York, Paris, Rome, Sao Paulo, Seoul, Sydney, Tokyo, and Tshwane
