'Protect Our Species'. It aims to draw attention to t rapid extinction of species across the world, which is directly linked to human activity which causes pollution, climate change and deforestation.
The concept of observing Earth Day was formally proposed by John McConnell at UNESCO conference on Environment in 1969 to remind humans of environmental deterioration caused by them and protect Earth. Later in 1971, a formal proclamation was signed to observe international Earth Day annually on Vernal Equinox by UN Secretary-General U Thant. It was first celebrated in 1970, and since then it is celebrated every year. United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) officially designate 22 April as International Mother Earth Day through resolution A/RES/63/278, adopted in 2009. Celebrations of this day are coordinated globally by Earth Day Network.
