Thailand promotes cannabis cultivation

Date: 20 May 2022 Tags: Miscellaneous

The government of Thailand has decided to distribute a million cannabis (marijuana) plants to households across the nation.

The government is planning to popularize cannabis cultivation by removing most of the restrictions.

  • Thailand has been trying to popularize cannabis as a cash crop since a third of the country’s population is engaged in agriculture.

  • It was the first country in the Southeast Asian region to legalise the use of cannabis for medical use in 2018.

Reasons for plan

  • The move would allow government and people to generate more than 10 billion baht per year in revenue from marijuana and hemp.

  • The government hopes that medicinal cannabis cultivation will attract international visitors and strengthen medical tourism.

  • The government will start distributing medical grade marijuana for personal use as well as commercial sale.

  • Large-scale business of cultivation of the crop will still require government permits.

  • People planning to grow cannabis will have to inform their local government.

  • If the extracted content contains more than 0.2 per cent of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), it will remain illegal.

Thailand’s stance

The Thai government has been slowly lifting restrictions on use of cannabis. The country has a long history of using the drug for healing.

Marijuana legalization

  • Neighboring countries such as Malaysia and Singapore have strict rules against possession and consumption of drugs, including marijuana.

  • Canada and Uruguay have legalized the recreational use of cannabis. Countries such as Netherlands, Spain and the Czech Republic permit smoking marijuana in public places.
