The new list of ministers has showed that L Murugan hailed from Kongu Nadu of Tamil Nadu State. This has received strong criticism from ruling party of Tamil Nadu.
Kongu Nadu is an informal name used to refer to the western part of Tamil Nadu. It is usually considered backward compared to rest of the state.
The issue took a serious turn on social media. Ruling DMK-Congress alleged that the BJP was trying to divide the state.
Kong Nadu has no reference in official records of the state. It was one of the five regions of the state given in the ancient Sangam literature.
The districts of Salem, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Karur, Namakkal, Tirupur and some parts of Dharmapuri and Dindigul districts come under this region.
It is named based on the presence of Kongu Vellala Gounder community in these areas. It is considered a bastion of AIADMK and some influence for BJP.
Reasons for origin
The BJP may be using it as a way of gaining votes from these regions in future. It may have been used to counter ruling party’s reference to central government as “union government”.
There is however no demand for dividing the state based on region in modern history of Tamil Nadu. It may not even gain traction after some days.
