NASA’s Ingenuity Helicopter sent along with perseverance rover will make its first flight on Mars to explore its geography.
Ingenuity will be able to explore larger area on the planet. Once it takes flight, it will be the first helicopter to fly on another planet.
The ingenuity helicopter was carried along with the perseverance mission to study Mars. It was landed in Jezero crater on the red planet.
The most important part of the mission was to look for signs of ancient life and collect samples of rock and sediment to be taken back.
Ingenuity helicopter is able to fly by using counter-rotating blades. It consists of wireless communication system, navigation system, computers and cameras. It has solar powered rechargeable batteries.
Significance of mission
Ingenuity was sent to check ability of helicopters to fly in thin air. Its performance will decide the future flyable Mars missions.
Helicopters can work as robotic scouts to survey terrain or as full specific science craft that can carry instrument payloads.
The flying mission will give scientists access to region’s geology that too in areas that are too steep or slippery for sending a rover.
