Niti and Nelong valley

Date: 12 March 2021 Tags: Miscellaneous

The Uttarakhand government has asked the centre to withdraw Inner Line Permit for Niti and Nelong valley of the state.

The Niti and Nelong valleys are located at the border areas of the state and Inner Line Permit regime has prevented tourism activities in the region.

  • The ILP system restricts movement in areas near to the border for every individual other than those with a formal permission.

  • Tourists have to get ILP for areas near Chinese border in the districts of Pithoragarh, Uttarkashi and Chamoli.

  • The authorities have said that removing ILP will help in improving more economic opportunities for locals and will prevent outward migration.

Border areas in Uttarakhand

  • Uttarakhand has border with China and Nepal. The state’s five districts are border districts. Pithoragarh is strategically significant as it shares boundaries with both China and Nepal.

  • The government had recently provided subsidy to set up mobile towers to improve connectivity in these far-off regions.

Nelong valley

The Nelong valley remains closed and out of bounds for the most part of the year but tourists start visiting when Gangotri shrine opens during summer.

Niti valley

  • The valley remains populated with locals for six months after which locals migrate to lower reaches of the valley.

  • Tourists come to this area when they visit Badrinath shrine during Char Dham yatra period.
