The National Safe Motherhood Day is observed every year in India on 11th April to enforce that women have availability and adequate access to care during Pregnancy childbirth and postnatal services. The theme for year 2019 was ‘Midwives for Mothers’.
In 2003, Government of India had declared 11th April as National Safe Motherhood Day at request of The White Ribbon Alliance (WRAI), an alliance of 1800 organizations. This date was selected as it is birth anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi, wife of Mohan Das Karam Chand Gandhi, the father of the nation. India is first country in the world to officially declare National Safe Motherhood Day. Every year WRAI select theme for this observance of this day. On this day several activities are organized to increase awareness and full-scale campaigns are organized throughout the country. The of goal these campaigns is to ensure that every woman has right to live and has safe motherhood, eliminating the pre and post pregnancy risks.
