Union Government has created new Ministry called ‘Jal Shakti’ by merging Ministries of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation along Drinking Water and Sanitation. This move will bring all aspects of water management and regulation under one department.
Ministers: Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has been appointed as minster of Jal Shakti ministry and Ram Lal Kataria as its minister of state (MoS).
About Jal Shakti Ministry
Its mandate will encompass issues ranging from international and inter-State water disputes, Namami Gange project, flagship initiative to clean Ganga, its tributaries and sub-tributaries.
It will roll out Central Government’s ambitious plans to provide piped water connections to every household in India by 2024. Its priority will be to provide clean drinking water to everyone.
During 17th Lok Sabha election campaign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised to create integrated ministry to deal with water related isuues. Even it was mentioned in vision document of Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) in run-up to 2019 Lok Sabha elections, ‘Nal se Jal’ scheme to provide piped drinking water to every household will be a component of government’s Jal Jivan Mission.
